Diary of a P.O.W., 106th Infantry Division, 1944-1988.

Diary entries are dated between December 16, 1944 and June 28, 1945. Beals includes a synopsis of the experiences described in the diary which he wrote between April 16 and April 20. This collection consists of a bound transcription of Beals's diary along with the research files of Julia J. Peterson. Ms. Peterson had considered publishing the diary. Her files include photocopies of bibliographical references, newspaper clippings, manuscript notes and ephemera including the Jan./Feb. 1981 issue of the The Cub of the Golden Lion, a publication of the veterans of the 106th Infantry Division.

John D. Beals, of Iowa City, Iowa served with the 106th Infantry Division during World War II. He entered service on February 1943 at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. Following his training he was stationed in England, France and Belgium. In Belgium he was sent to the front lines on December 7, 1944 and was captured by the Germans on December 19, 1944 near Shönberg, Germany.
